TNU: Neue Leben der Zukunft
February 24th 4566
Narrated by Elios Adams
Yuka Layton; a mid-twenties girl from the 21st century ended up in the future unbeknown to her because she was chosen to affect the future events. She would soon come to the realization of where she was and that everyone she once knew was lost. Upon her arrival in the future (the current present) she was found by civilians whom called for help. A Federation Medical Service Ambulance was sent and after convincing her to go with them the Paramedics took her to Sir North’s Medical Center in New York. She would soon be transferred to the Starfleet Medical Reintegration Facility for counseling and to have memories of the future implanted in her mind to help her with this transition. (Like the technology in the Matrix Movies; they downloaded memories into her brain). She then was released to the Galactic Federation’s Citizen Welfare Ministry whom registered her and issued her an apartment and a stipend. This is where our story begins…

Yuka Layton Memorial Center; Citizen Welfare Ministry – New Citizen Intake Room Six
The Social Worker had finished her paperwork and entered Yuka’s information in to the Federation’s computers. The worker pulled a pad from a connector it was attached to. Yuka was looking around the room while the woman was doing this. The room had a desk up against the wall with three chairs to the right of it. Glass walls that could see outside and the other areas in the building. A small plant and the typical white deadening lights that were common in government offices. The Social Worker put the pad in front of Yuka. “Just sign this and it will confirm your living assignment, health benefits and stipend amounts.” She said. Yuka stares at the data pad. It wanted a fingerprint. “So wait… don’t I have to work or something?” “No; you can if you would like but here on Earth everyone is given the option to contribute to society if they want; it is not a requirement… We have found people work best when they do what they love… If that means they take their entire life to find what they want to do then so be it… If you are interested in education I can have a representative from the Federation Educational Foundation e-mail you information on courses… There is also always the option of military service…” “So… Wait… people can just be dead beats… isn’t that counterproductive?” “Not at all… People here choose to further the world… Help each other for the greater good…” “Isn’t there corruption though… Like it can’t just be perfect…” The social worker looks confused.
Yuka thinks for a moment about how this sounds too utopian to be real and how no one questions the overarching theme of things… “1984 much” She said in her head. “You are a good citizen” She thought chuckling in her head. Yuka puts her finger on the thing. It scans it then beeps. The social worker takes the pad then gives her another pad. “This is your assignment information. We can arrange for a car to take you or you can take the tram system; we would bill your stipend for the car…” Yuka glances over the document. She was given an apartment; food and basic amenities did not seem to cost anything here. “So they give people enough to keep them docile… So, dystopian of them…” She mumbles.
The social worker glares “I’m sorry… is something the matter?” “Nope; nothing at all… Thanks.” Yuka said taking the pad with her and grabbing the bag of things the hospital issued her. They gave her a backpack that was bigger than the one she had with her when she arrived. She was happy that she at least prepared for staying somewhere if she needed so she had some things that were familiar to her. The larger bag, extra clothes and such was a nice touch though.
She headed out of the room; the social worker watching her leave still taken aback by some of what she said. The main room of this office was full of desks, service terminals and chairs. One of the agents at the desk nodded to her as she left the building. There was a tram stop right outside. She decided she would take this. A tramcar appearing to float in the sky soon approached the platform. She was the only one at this station. It soon landed making a short hiss sound as it touched down. Its doors opened. The only person in the tram got off… It had no operator. Yuka stared at it wondering how it was floating in the sky.
“This tram is an eastbound line to Memorial Center, District One. Welcome to the Earth Transit Authority. Please remember to not open the tram doors unless instructed to do so by transit security. If you have an emergency transit security can be contacted by pressing the red emergency button next to the doors to the tram." The tram’s PA system said. Yuka blinked “Well this is like any other subway… Even if it flies…” She enters the tram taking a seat “The doors are closing… Please remember to remain seated while the tram is in motion.” The doors close and the craft starts to move slowly floating in the air. It almost looked to Yuka like it was following some invisible line; this was pretty much just a cable car just more advanced she thought.
The tram soon arrives at another station. It keeps flying then landing and eventually it flies for a while arriving at a floating housing complex “This is housing district 12…” It continues to repeat previous recordings. Yuka glances at that pad and gets up exiting the door opposite the one she entered through. As she exits it announces its doors are closing and they close. She turns around watching it fly away. This place had a courtyard outside of it which looked rather beautiful. The building reminds her of an upscale apartment complex as she enters it. “Greetings… Have you tried Megatravel… Experience far reaching destinations like Valoris XI, Risa or see the Battle of 4550 up close and personal from the safety of your own home… Travel anywhere virtual reality can take you from the safety of your own home… Contact a sales agent today at NX-005-2682.” A hologram appears as if blocking the doorway. She reluctantly walks and goes through it. It was showing pictures of the thing and where it could show someone. “I don’t even understand… Is this a commercial or do ads just stalk you here…?” She thought. She looks around at all the community tables and other things. She sees terminals that look like replicators. She walks up to one
“Hello; please select a payment method.” It displays “Account” “Stipend” “Bill to…” “Ultracard” “Alternative currency” She presses stipend. “Identifying… Thank you Ms. Layton… Please make a frequent selection or speak your order.” There was nothing on her frequent list. “So this is like a Star Trek replicator… I wonder….” She thought “C-4” She said “Error! Weapons cannot be generated with this system persistent to applicable laws. Please make a selection” She ponders for a moment “Uggs boots” “Error… This system is not provisioned to create clothing… Please make a selection.” “Pie” “Please select a type.” “Apple” “Please select a variant…” “Normal?” “Generating… In the future you can create this food faster by saying “Apple Pie hot” at the selection screen.” A large piece of pie appears on a plate in the receptacle part of the replicator.
She grabs the pie plate. Utensils were then generated “Have an enjoyable day.” The machine announces with a happy face emote on its menu. She decides to sit at one of the tables looking around as she eats the pie. It was pretty good and the day was quite nice. When she sat down a screen appears “The weather for Memorial Center is scheduled to be sunny and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. No storms have been programmed into the atmospheric control system for this week. The next rain is scheduled for March 1st. Please be prepared. Would you like to know the news or if you want something else please just state your request?” “Go away.” “We are sorry to have bothered you.” The screen looks sad then disappears. She finishes eating the pie. Why on earth was everything so interactive; were people just this lazy now… Or was this part of keeping them docile… She put the plate back in the replicator and it disappeared. She then left heading for the elevator. It did not ask her what floor she wanted it just went to a floor and stopped. She exited it and checked her pad for her room. She walked down the hall and found her door. It opened itself. The apartment was a studio apartment complete with replicator, a personal study desk with a computer terminal, two dressers, a sort of nook, a rather nice bed with a privacy shade thing, lighting and a seating area with a table that had one of those holographic things. She decides to sit on her new bed. This place might be interesting she though. As she was laying there she also noticed a balcony door. She got up leaving her bag on the bed and went outside looking out the balcony. It had a chair outside. She closed her eyes for a moment breathing deep. She noticed the air was lighter here but it seemed clean to her; much cleaner then in her “home”. She took time to sink in to the experience of her newfound living space and the nice weather she was in.

Yuka Layton Memorial Center; Housing District 12 – Yuka’s Apartment
As Yuka stood there taking in her surroundings with her eyes closed. She opened her eyes after about ten minutes; while taking all this in she was meditating clearing her mind so she could experience new things without regret. She never knew if she would see her home again but was hopeful she could make friends and find something to do here so she did not dwell on what she had lost. She went back inside opening her bag and taking out a short sleeve shirt; it was pink and a matching frayed skirt. She changed into these clothes and decided to head back downstairs.
