The New Universes: Of Life and Death October 20th 4564 Preface
Typical the TNU stories have followed states of war and conflict and the “soldiers” or civilians involved in these conflicts. Of Life and Death takes a new path; following the members of Response Squad 12 of the Federation Medical Service’s Emergency Medical Service or Ambulance Service. This story follows the emergency calls and lives of the staff of this squad overseen by Dr. Earl Dalton and Crew Chief EMT-A/PA Ai Roslin.

Ai Roslin Edward Jackson Rescue Shuttle 12; New York; District 6
Ai had been working for the Federation Medical Service for about ten years and had seen her share of cases. This time though she was actually in charge of a squad. It was the night shift so the usual three medics was cut down to two; a new rookie Ed Jackson and herself. She wondered what their first night would be like; it was after all Ed’s first time without a doctor on top of him and without every piece of what he was doing being analyzed by trainers. Ai did not like having new paramedics assigned to her; sure as a physician’s assistant she did not need an EMT-A but she had one anyway; having a paramedic fresh out of training act like he/she knew about medicine was annoying to say the least.
Ai glanced over at Ed whom was in the back checking their supplies “What exactly made you want to do this job anyway… Some deludedly insane idea that we actually help people…” Ai chuckles “You could say that; actually my uncle had passed on because he did not get medical care in time; I don’t want that to happen to anyone else so I decided to go to school to become a paramedic.” Ed was 22, a tall Caucasian man with black hair and green eyes. He was muscular as well; he could have been part of a rescue squad in the Fire and Rescue Service but decided to join the Ambulance Service. “You think that you could make a difference… I hate to be the bearer of bad news but even with all of our advanced training and technology if someone’s going to die; they will die… Not a whole let we can do to stop that.” “We can at least try… By the way everything is in order.” Ai nods turning back to the pilots station and pressing a few buttons on the console powering up the shuttle. Ed returned to his chair and sat down using the VX mental link that he had (Similar to the ones Delta Force use just much lower tech and no shield) “Squad 12; 10-8.” Ai was 28; joined the Ambulance Service after moving on to college early at 16. She started in the Service as a communications technician and dispatcher but moved out into the field upon completing her PA. She had long auburn hair tied into a pony, blue eyes and was of about average height for a Japanese woman.
A call appeared on their computer screen then came over the VX comm “Squad 12; tram versus pedestrian; GPS and known victim information transmitted reporting party says transporters do not function on this tram route. Respond code 3.” Ai marks the GPS coordinates into the shuttles computer and flies the shuttle towards the accident’s location activating lights and siren to alert oncoming aircraft and trams of their presence.

Ai Roslin Edward Jackson Rescue Shuttle 12; New York; District 6
As the medical shuttle arrived at the tram platform a Transit Police Officer was already on the scene interviewing witnesses. Ai landed the shuttle; a tram had slammed in to someone on the tracks. Why the person was even in the tracks was unknown “Squad 12 on scene.” Ed sent over his VX commlink to dispatch. Ai grabbed her medical bag; Ed grabbed a hover stretcher and other gear and they headed out of the shuttle. “Ed get a scan of the person’s vitals and injuries and I’ll begin treatment.” Ai said as she and her partner got closer to the person. The Transit Officer came over “Looks like he was trying to stop the tram per witnesses… Well I guess he got his wish; it sure is stopped now…” The officer said with a bit of sarcasm to his voice. Ai just glanced at the officer with a distasteful look at him laughing. The person was stuck between the tram; his leg was trapped under the tram. There was blood near the area where the leg was caught and it also looked like he bashed his head on to the cement when he fell from being pulled under the tram as it rammed into him. Ai checks his eyes for responsiveness and pulls out a hypospray giving him something to control the pain once Ed gives her the vital information which appeared in her VX patient display mode. He went in to unconsciousness after she gave him the medication; and oddly upon arrival he was not screaming or making noise. Ed tries to see if he can get the leg that was pinned free but he was unable to do so. He looks at the transit cop “Can you have control raise the tram slightly…” Ai was reviewing the information Ed sent her; his leg was broken underneath the tram but it looked like bleeding was not too bad; they could stabilize that. The head injury though apparently caused a bounce upon impact as there was bleeding in his brain. That was nothing she could treat. “We need to get him to a hospital sooner than later; his brain hemorrhaging…” The transit officer radioed in to tram control and the tram raised very lightly. Ed pulled out a dermal regenerator and a subdermal one. He began to repair the bone. “Bleeding has stopped we can repair the skin on transport.” Ed said and Ai agreed; they loaded him onto the stretcher. Ai pulled out another hypospray and injected it into him. She gave him some form of electrolyte balancing medication then she grabbed a small bag from the med kit and pulled the end off of it. She used the IV system to put a self-repairing IV into him then grabbed her and Ed’s bag as Ed took him to the shuttle. As they got back on the shuttle Ed went up front “Squad 12 on route to medical facility with brain injury. Transmitting medical chart now.” He transmitted as Ai continued to monitor the patient.
Once the shuttle doors closed and it flew into the air as Ai began repairing the skin damage and making sure the leg bone was fixed. Ai pulled out a special tool from in one of the drawers and began to scan the man’s brain with it. She then lowered down the holoscanner and had it make a full scan of his brain. Ai found the point of the bleed; his head must have hit the ground hard for his skull to have fractured in that way to cause that. She pulled out another tool and put it around his head. The device began to control body functions in case the damage caused him to lose control of a crucial body function. The shuttle then landed at Sir North’s Medical Center. A nurse came out along with someone in surgical gear. Ai transfers the holoscan and other information to the ships computer and it transmits to the hospital. Ai then brings out the stretcher with the man on it and Ed follows behind The four of them transfer the man to a hospital stretcher. The doctor glances at Ai and Ed “We will take him from here.” Ai nods as the medical staff go off with him.
